JOHANNESBURG. French arms manufacturer Thales thought it was off the hook in South Africa after it stroke a deal with the country´s National Prosecution Authority to come clean about its bribe to South Africa´s former Deputy President Jacob Zuma. But the deal was linked to the trial of Zuma´s former advisor Schabir Shaik, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Now it appears that the deal with NPA may not be cast in stone and that Thales may have to deliver Alain Thetard, the former Thales manager in South Africa, when the Jacob Zuma trial starts next July.
Zuma appeared in a Durban court last week. Thetard´s whereabouts is unknown, as his employer is not giving access to him.
